Look out for Number One

In my opinion a person has the right to "Look out for Number One" (themselves) first. I think that taking care of yourself should be the primary basis for a person's decisions. A person should live there life making sure they are safe and well. But also helping other people and making sure they are safe and well too. When a person is sick they should take care of themselves before others to make sure that they get better or if a person is very poor they should take care of themselves first. But if a person is well and has a fair amount of money when they see someone in need of help they should help that person as much as they can.

Scrooge's Diary

December 24, 1843

Today was a terrible day, with all of the townspeople saying Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! This day has to be the worst day of the year! No one should get the day off tomorrow. There is nothing to celebrate. All you do is lose money because you bought other people things, things they do not need. If they are pour it is there own fault! I will not go spend time with my nephew on Christmas. It is a waste of time, this Christmas thing! I do not want to hear carolers sing. Today I had one right outside my door.

The Pearl!

What we can learn about the pearl's symbolism from the reactions it evokes is that people act differently when there is a lot of money around, and some people will do almost anything for some.

Human characteristics that the pearl brings out in Kino, Juana, the neighbors, the doctor, the priest, and the townspeople are hope, happiness, jealousy, regret, and fear. Human characteristics that Kino has are happiness and hope because he has a pearl. He feels that he is no longer poor and can give his family what he has always wanted to give them. Human characteristics that Juana has are hope, but also fear. She hopes that her family will have a good life and she fears that they are in danger because other people want the pearl very badly. Human characteristics that the neighbors have are happiness and jealousy because they are happy for Kino, but they wish that they had found the pearl instead of him. A human characteristic that the doctor has is regret. He regrets that he didn't help Kino when Kino was poor. A human characteristic that the priest has is happiness because Kino and Juana will become married at his church. The townspeople have human characteristics of jealousy and regret because they want the pearl and they never cared about Kino or gave him a second glance.
